This Was A Human Body Week

This week we've been studying the human body as part of our "ease into school" curriculum. The kids have loved it! One day we looked at Uncover the Human Body (a great book for kids because you can touch the three dimensional parts as you read about them), read Magic School Bus Inside the Human Body, and drew a small human body with ribs and heart. Today we traced our bodies on large paper (the same paper we used for this and this) and filled in some of the major organs.

We learned a few new and interesting facts like:
1. Blood pumps to the heart, goes to the lungs to be filled with oxygen, then flows back to the heart before being pumped all over the body.
2. Arteries are red and carry blood out of the heart; veins are blue and carry blood to the heart. (The art-loving boy especially loved the colorful parts. He was quite disappointed that there was nothing rainbow-colored inside of him.)
3. By watching a few of the videos on this Kid's Health page we learned more about the circulatory and digestive systems.
And the cost for all this learning, you might ask? A little digging in our book piles and a little online searching = absolutely free!
When the kids begin their tutorial next week, we won't have much time for extra studies at home, but we will still eat breakfast, lunch and dinner together. I thought this would be an excellent opportunity to continue to talk and learn about the digestive system and health.
Maybe one of our first lessons will when the kids help make a  breakfast of bacon cheddar muffins with fruit, and we name each of the food groups we eat.
We have a few nutrition and exercise type books that would be helpful for this, so this body study is the beginning of a beautiful school year for us!

  1. You are such a good mom...teaching kids is a lot of fun!

  2. How fun! You are doing a great job! I've done a human body study with my kids too! If you want some extra ideas, you can go here:

  3. Great way to teach the kids! I especially love the idea of tracing their own bodies and identifying where things go.

    Thanks for playing 6WS!

  4. Sounds like a great, fun way to learn about the body! Thanks for visiting my 6WS.

  5. What great ideas! I may have to steal them and do the same with my kiddos ;)

  6. What a fun way of learning! I homeschool my 3 kids. Last year, me and my 2nd grade son did a unit on the digestive system. Boy were there a lot of giggles when we got to the excretory system. Then I got to the 5th grade unit on digestive system with my other son and I pretty much lost them with the words burp and fart were in their lesson plans. Boys.
